Ronald Appleby, Q.C.
Director
Ronald Appleby's expertise in
taxation and estate planning has earned him the respect of clients, the
Canadian business community, government officials, and other lawyers. He is
known for his wisdom, judgment and intellect, and can be relied upon to provide
practical business answers as well as solid legal advice. Ronnie takes pride in
his personal relationships with clients, and sees his role as that of a trusted
friend and premier adviser to families and closely held businesses.
Ronnie's practice includes
consulting on income tax and business matters in major commercial transactions
and corporate reorganizations, as well as estate planning for high-net-worth
individuals. He is one of the most experienced and effective lawyers in the
country in dealing with the unique problems of family business, including
succession.
An honours graduate of
Osgoode Hall Law School, Ronnie served as an editor of the Osgoode Hall Law
Journal and received the outstanding individual award at the Ontario Law
School's Advocacy Tournament. He attained first class honours in four
consecutive years at the University of Toronto, from which he holds a Bachelor
of Commerce degree.
Ronnie was called to the Bar
of Ontario with first class honours in March 1970. He has been a partner in the
firm since 1973 and was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1982.
Ronnie has been a frequent
writer and lecturer on tax and estate planning issues, and served as a special
lecturer on the faculty of Osgoode Hall Law School for 15 years. He is a member
of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the York County Law Association, the
Canadian Bar Association, the Canadian Tax Foundation, the International Fiscal
Association, and the Foundation for Legal Research in Canada.
In addition, he serves on the
boards of directors of numerous corporations, and has played a leadership role
in many major civic and philanthropic organizations. He has served as President
of The Jewish Federation of Greater Toronto, and of the Canadian Friends of
Hebrew University, Chairman of the Board of Overseers of the Jewish Theological
Seminary; and has chaired major fundraising campaigns or dinners for the Mt.
Sinai Hospital, Jewish National Fund, Reena Foundation and the Hartman
Institute.
Ronnie is married to Bunnie.
They have four children, 2 sons-in-law and two grandchildren.
